Dermal Fillers

Dermal fillers can immediately reduce the lines on your face that you see when your facial muscles are not moving, known as static lines. This gives a natural and subtle lift for a younger and refreshed look, and are very often used on the lips, chin, cheeks, under the eyes and on the nasolabial folds which run from the side of the nose to the corner of the mouth.

They last approximately six to 24 months depending on the type of filler used, the quantity and the area treated; with no recovery time, this makes them extremely popular.

At Arden House we preferentially use the most sophisticated dermal filler range, Juvederm. It’s the highest quality product on the market which means reliability and outstanding performance, and Mr Jerry Farrier is one of the few clinicians in the UK able to perform the 8 Point Facelift, known as ‘the non-surgical facelift’.

Juvederm’s most advanced products contain lidocaine, an anaesthetic that helps numb the area injected during treatment, which is proven to improve your comfort.

How dermal fillers work

Our dermal fillers contain hyaluronic acid, a natural substance found in the body that attracts water to the skin and plumps it up, but this depletes with age, so we’re simply topping up the areas of your face most affected; usually fine lines around the nose, mouth, lips, cheeks and forehead. Being a natural substance found in the body already, hyaluronic acid-based fillers are extremely unlikely to produce an allergic reaction and are the safest to use.

Our products

We will talk you through the full range of options available at Arden House and explain how cost affects longevity. We frequently choose to use Juvederm from Allergan; their next generation Vycross products are extremely popular because of the longer lasting effects, smoother consistency, ease of infiltration and the integrated use of lidocaine (an anaesthetic):

Volbella is designed specifically for the lip and mouth area. The smooth gel is injected using an ultra-fine needle and it has been developed to give a soft, malleable feel. The gel fills in lip lines and vertical lines around the mouth and augments the lips, lasting up to 12 months.

Volift can be used on the lips, nasolabial folds and around the brow line to complement other products and elevate the features, reducing the appearance of medium to deep lines and depressions, lasting up to 15 months.

Voluma is used to replenish lost volume, especially in the cheek area, and can improve the overall shape of your face. The volumiser supports the skin in a way that allows you to fine tune your natural beauty, lasting up to 18 months.

Areas we treat

Crow’s feet: the wrinkles in the outside corners of the eyes caused by ageing, sun exposure, expressions such as smiling and smoking.

Frown lines: when we contract our forehead muscles, the glabella, deep lines can appear. Also referred to as an “11”, frown lines form between your eyebrows and over time start to linger, becoming a bugbear for many people.

These lingering lines can be treated with dermal fillers, but Botox® can be used to help prevent those lines appearing with facial movement.

Smoker’s lines: dermal fillers can effectively smooth and fill out these crepey vertical lines around the mouth for a much softer, younger look.

Marionette lines: located just below the corners of the mouth, these wrinkles can make you look sad or angry when relaxing your face.

Lips: as we age our lips lose volume and definition, and many people can benefit from using lip fillers to subtly make their lips plumper, increase contours and lip outlines or, if the lips are asymmetric, gently modify them to adjust proportions.

Nasolabial folds: also referred to as “smile lines”, these lines run down the sides of the nose to the corner of the mouth. Most of us notice them when we smile, laugh or talk, but over time they can develop into static constant lines or grooves.

Cheeks: ageing usually contributes to volume loss in the cheeks; the round, full look diminishes as the fat pads in our cheeks gravitate downwards.

Décolletage: inevitably the skin loses its elasticity and firmness over time. Sun damage in particular can contribute to this aged look on the upper chest and the thinning of the skin can amplify the neckbands, adding years to your appearance.

What to expect:

Before treatment

You will have an in depth consultation with us free of charge in which your face, neck and upper chest are examined and your treatment options are explained. You will be asked for your full medical history so we can check whether treatments are safe for you. It would be helpful if you didn’t wear make-up (especially foundation that masks or makes skin cleansing difficult).

During treatment

Appointments are approximately 20 minutes long and fillers are injected using an ultra-fine needle which minimises discomfort. The presence of the anaesthetic lidocaine in the Juvederm products we use helps to numb the area injected.

After treatment

  • You can wear make-up over the treated area after 12 hours.
  • Avoid direct sunlight, saunas and steam rooms for two weeks.
  • Avoid other treatments to the same areas for seven days.
  • Avoid massaging the area.
  • You can take anti-inflammatory medication or analgesia should you feel it necessary, according to the instructions on the box.

Are the effects immediate?

You will see a subtle immediate effect and two to three days later the serum settles to achieve the full result. Treatment may be staged over several visits if both volumising and wrinkle reduction is required; volume is always addressed first and fine tuning of smaller lines and wrinkles done thereafter. Repeated treatments can be safely taken indefinitely because the body absorbs the hyaluronic acid in the fillers over time.

How long do dermal fillers last?

From six to 24 months, depending on the product used, where it is used, the amount used and the effect desired. Repeated treatments can be safely taken indefinitely because the body naturally breaks down the hyaluronic acid in the fillers over time.

Am I suitable for dermal fillers?

If you are over 18 and aren’t pregnant or breastfeeding then yes. There is no known risk but these are precautions in line with regulatory guidelines. Come in for a free in depth consultation to have us examine your face and discuss your options if you feel dermal fillers could be appropriate for you.

Arden House will not be the cheapest provider of this treatment but we are among the highest quality providers because of our staff – Mr Jerry Farrier is an experienced Consultant Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeon – and our products – the Juvederm range offers the highest quality dermal fillers on the market. You can therefore expect a reliable and high quality result. It’s your face after all, why take a risk?

Are there any side effects?

You may experience temporary tenderness, redness, swelling or, in rare cases, bruising. Any redness usually settles in hours, swelling and most bruising in a few days. Other rare side effects include allergy, granulomas and, very rarely, damage to blood vessels that can lead to tissue damage. If symptoms persist for more than two weeks or you notice any other side effects please contact the surgery.

Why you’re safe with us for dermal fillers

While there is an independent body that acts as a watchdog over those administering treatment, there are still many providers out there who are sub-standard and who use cheaper, less effective products; some may even have been tampered with and so are not safe.

We believe it’s vital that any practitioner administering these products should have an in depth understanding of facial muscles, skin types, nerve supply and the underlying anatomical framework – only then can a suitable treatment that fits with your physiology and needs be agreed and carried out properly.

Mr Jerry Farrier is a Consultant Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeon with many years experience and can provide you with the full range of treatments confidently and safely. He has completed an aesthetic fellowship and has had extensive training, and is also one of the few practitioners in the UK offering the 8 Point Facelift.

His qualifications include:

  • Fellowship of Intercollegiate Royal College of Surgeons
  • Specialist in Surgical Dentistry / Oral Surgery / Maxillofacial Surgery
  • Fellowship of Royal College of Surgeons England
  • Fellowship of Royal College of Surgeons Ireland
  • Bachelor of Medicine and Surgery
  • Fellowship in Dental Surgery
  • Bachelor of Dental Surgery
