Could you be one of 20% of the population susceptible to aggressive gum disease?
If you seem to be doing all the right things but still have concerns, come and see us.
Your teeth are supported by a complex biological structure of gums, ligaments and bone. They are like the foundations of a building and are as important as the teeth themselves.
Bad breath and bleeding gums are the first signs of gum disease; you don’t need to ignore these signs, we can help. When soft plaque isn’t removed from your teeth it can harden and turn into calculus (tartar); plaque and calculus together cause gum disease.
Gum disease is a painless process where the supporting structures around the teeth are eroded and weakened. Left untreated, eventually even healthy teeth can simply fall out.
Just as important is the impact of gum disease on your general health. Mouth infections left untreated allow your mouth bacteria to seep into the body – causing tiredness and reducing the ability to fight disease. There has been published research on the links between gum disease and heart disease and even low weight premature babies.
Sarah, Ian and Michael work alongside Leanne and Lisa, our dental hygienists to monitor and treat the problems such as gum disease, in the best way for you as an individual. Our professional team will also advise how things such as diet and lifestyle affect the overall health of your mouth. They will also suggest ways and show you the correct way to maintain your oral hygiene when you are at home, so that you can make sure your mouth stays as fresh and healthy as possible.
We won’t automatically suggest you see a dental hygienist but we do think prevention really is better than cure. Our hygienists, Lisa and Leanne, are excellent and are trusted with the care of your gums. It’s the job of our dental hygienists to clean your gums, teeth and the tooth surfaces, including the bits that you can’t see, whilst offering advice and support for you to continue their good work at home.
We believe good dental hygiene is about far more than a “scale and polish” so we may recommend one appointment or a series of appointments – depending on what we see and what you tell us. Those who respond well to treatment may have Top up Cleans with our dentists, reassured that our expert hygienists are still on hand if needed.
There are lots of reasons why an appointment could help:
• Have trouble reaching the back? – Arthritis or just a brush that’s too big; the dental hygiene team can spot the problem and suggest solutions.
• Thinking about teeth whitening? – All whitening products contain a bleaching agent and it can do harm if we apply it to unhealthy gums; our dental hygienists can get your gums in tiptop condition.
• Food gets trapped? - This can cause a number of problems; the dental hygienist team can recommend products to help.
Our hygienists, using their skills and the Florida Probe, (the latest in computer aided charting) can produce a report showing your gum health, areas to focus on, where brushing may be missing and the impact of illness or lifestyle. Armed with this report and their advice you can begin to improve your oral health. We also store these records so together we can track your progress at each visit.
At Arden House we of course also care for our younger population. Prevention here is key; according to the patient’s need either the dentist or the hygienist will carry out their Oral Health Education, this may also involve scaling, polishing and disclosing where necessary.
As a team, we jointly look after your mouth and take pride in the quality of service we provide. Our approach offers you prevention against disease, treatment of disease and the best way to look after the dental investments you have made so far.
If it’s right for you, we will also be happy to discuss how teeth whitening, adult orthodontics, bonding and other treatments such as same day crowns could help make your smile even brighter and easier to clean.
