We’re pleased to offer SmileGuard by OPRO, the official mouthguard of England Rugby and the most reliable form of oral protection if you or your children enjoy contact sports.

OPRO manufactures mouthguards for more than 1,000 schools and well known sports clubs nationwide, and its SmileGuard is the first custom-fit mouthguard to carry a warranty: you are covered for up to £1,000 worth of private dental treatment in the event of an injury while you’re wearing it.

Why choose a custom-fit mouthguard?

The British Dental Association recommends custom-fit mouthguards over shop-bought ‘boil and bite’ products which may not fit properly and therefore can only offer sub-optimal protection. We would strongly advise anyone engaging in contact sports including lacrosse, martial arts, mountain biking and show jumping, along with the more traditional sports such as rugby and hockey, to wear one.

The advantage over ‘boil and bite’ mouthguards

Having a dentist take your impression to ensure the best fit for both protection and comfort is more expensive than buying a generic mouthguard over the counter, but the advantages in comfort and safety far outweigh the extra cost. They are guaranteed to offer comfort and protection, are named, and offer uniform protection around each tooth.

For this reason it’s the clear recommendation of the British Dental Association, the Rugby Football Union and the English Hockey Association that only custom-fit mouthguards are worn.

Mouthguards are classed as items of personal protective equipment (PPE) and it is an offence to sell an item of PPE which does not bear the CE mark. It is also an offence to apply a CE mark if the class requirements are not met. All OPRO mouthguards are fully and legally CE certified.

Only custom made mouthguards prevent head injuries

Custom made mouthguards fit well enough to prevent some sports-related concussions by helping to absorb shock, stabilise the head and neck, and limit movement caused by a direct hit to the jaw. A study published in the May/June 2014 issue of General Dentistry found that American high school football players wearing store-bought mouthguards were more than twice as likely to suffer mild traumatic brain injuries than those wearing properly fitted, custom mouthguards, which has obvious implications for rugby players in the UK.

Why choose SmileGuard?

• unbeatable protection against sporting injuries to the teeth
• choose from 18 colours and many speciality patterns, even design your own
• 12 months cover for accidental loss or injury up to £1,000, subject to a £100 excess

How much do they cost?

SmileGuards start at £85 and they come in three classes: Mid-Impact, Hi-Impact and Pro-Impact. The price reflects the protection type you require and the design or colour you choose.

What are the different levels of protection?

OPRO offers a range of protection levels with the following guidelines:

Mid-Impact: use for rugby, judo and other sports that do not use a hard stick or ball and where the head is not an intentional target.

Hi-Impact: use for hockey, lacrosse, boxing, martial arts and sports that do use a hard stick or ball, or where the head is a target.

Pro-Impact: these unique tri-laminate mouthguards combine the slimmer fit of a Mid-Impact with the extra protection of a Hi-Impact. They are suitable for the serious player looking for ultimate performance and comfort.
