Why do I need to see / refer to a specialist?
Sometimes it is recommended to see a specialist to get an expert opinion, advice about your care or to carry out a particular treatment. Periodontal specialists working within the NHS are hard to come by, with the majority based in dental hospitals.
At Arden House we are able to offer patients a Specialist Service in Periodontology. It is most common for your dentist to recommend you see a specialist, although we welcome self-referrals too and you can make an appointment directly.
Periodontitis and it’s appropriate management is now more than ever at the forefront of patient complaints. Having the option to see our specialist, offers your patients an alternative, local choice and gives you the support and peace of mind that you are providing patients with the best possible care to treat their disease. For periodontal treatment to be successful, succinct appointments are often necessary with timely follow-ups, in order to manage and treat the disease in the optimum way; we are delighted therefore to be able to offer this service at Arden House.

You’re Patients are in Safe Hands
A specialist is a registered clinician who has received additional training and met certain criteria in a particular area; it is a GDC recognisable qualification.
Joel Thomas is a dentist who has undergone further post-graduate training and is an integral part of our oral health team at Arden House; our dentists, hygienists and oral health educator complete the team.
What can Joel offer?
Joel is able to carry out both non-surgical and surgical treatments for all types of gum disease. Joel not only treats gum disease he is also able to help treat the associated unwanted side effects that may have arisen due to the disease process. Where appropriate he can improve access for cleaning or carry out procedures to regenerate bone that has been lost. He is also able to carry out surgical treatment to improve some areas of recession.
Joel is happy to do as much or as little to assist you as you wish. It is often preferable to refer a patient earlier in their journey to insure the best care and prognosis for them and reassurance for you.
Joel is happy to work with you and your hygiene team to provide bespoke treatment plans or he will carry out all of the non-surgical treatment himself. If you don’t have your own hygienist, with your permission, under Joel’s guidance, sometimes our team may carry out the initial non-surgical treatment.
Joel evidently performs all the surgical treatment which in essence covers treatment for:
- Furcation lesions
- Crown lengthening
- Recession covering
- Peri-implantitis
- Bone Grafting – Periodontal and implant sites and Immediately Post
- Extraction
- Crown lengthening for aesthetics and function
Patients will be given a written summary of their consultation, outlining their treatment options and a bespoke oral hygiene plan. We will of course also keep you up to date with their progress.
